Find out more about the range of facilities increasing recycling in Southdowns
To put the strategy in place, a network of facilities has been developed, including a Materials Recovery Facility, an In-Vessel Composting Facility, an Energy Recovery Facility and Waste Transfer Stations. Remaining local landfill and energy recovery will also be utilised for any non-recoverable waste.
The map below shows the locations of the facilities. All the sites have been selected after careful consideration of all the alternatives and with regard to planning guidance, the Waste Local Plan and recommendations contained in the Inspector’s Report.
Our state-of-the-art Hollingdean Materials Recovery Facility sorts and bulks household waste from East Sussex and Brighton and Hove.
Our Woodlands In-Vessel Composting Facility in Whitesmith processes kitchen and green garden waste.
The Newhaven Energy Recovery Facility processes about half the household waste in the South Downs area.
Currently most of the area’s bin lorries tip directly into landfill sites, often travelling large distances.
