Staff at the waste transfer station contacted the emergency services just after 8am this morning after being concerned by an unpleasant smell from a consignment of residual waste within the tipping hall. The fire service, police and ambulances were quickly on the scene and evacuated the adjacent HWRS and nearby industrial site as a precaution and Freshfields Lane was closed.
The waste transfer station has been cordoned off and and the eleven staff on-site given full medical checks by paramedics. No one is believed to be injured. Separately two drivers using the tipping hall at the time of the incident have self-presented at a local hospital as a precaution.
It is believed the Pebsham waste transfer station and household waste recycling site will be closed for the remainder of the day, Further information will be given when it is available.
Veolia takes health and safety extremely seriously and a full investigation is being carried out into this incident.
