Go green and recycle ‘eggstra’ waste this Easter!

Veolia Environmental Services in partnership with East Sussex County Council and Brighton & Hove City Council are encouraging residents to ‘go green’ and recycle your ‘eggstra’ Easter packaging.

Over 80 million Easter Eggs are sold on average each year generating around 8,000 tonnes of extra packaging waste. So whilst enjoying your chocolate treats this year remember that your fourteen local Household Waste Recycling Sites will be open throughout the Easter holiday as normal with the exception of the following:

  • Brighton will be open Good Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday 9am to 5pm.
  • Crowborough will be closed on Good Friday, open 9am to 1pm Saturday and Sunday and closed on Monday.
  • Eastbourne site will be closed on Good Friday, open 8am to 12pm Saturday and Sunday and closed on Monday.
  • Hailsham will open 9am to 1pm on Good Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
  • Hove will be closed Good Friday and Monday but open on Saturday 8.30am to 1.30pm and Sunday 10.30am to 1.30pm.

Making sure that Easter packaging is reused as much as possible and recycled instead of just throwing it away provides a real benefit to the environment by helping to stop so much waste going into landfill and providing the resources to make new products.  Most of the waste deposited at the 14 sites by residents is now being diverted from landfill, with many sites regularly diverting around 90%.

Martin Benson, Household Waste Recycling Sites Manager, Veolia Environmental Services South Downs says; “Everyone looks forward to receiving their chocolate eggs at Easter, but they often come with a lot of unwanted packaging.  We are encouraging residents to think green this Easter and ensure that they recycle as much of their unwanted packaging as possible.”
